Tito’s Handmade Vodka, America’s Original Craft Vodka, was founded by Bert “Tito” Beveridge in 1995. The vodka is distilled and bottled in Austin, Texas, on the same land where the venture started. The company works with various animal charities to rescue and protect dogs through their Vodka For Dog People program.

Dogs have been a part of the culture at Tito’s Handmade Vodka (Tito’s) since the company started 22 years ago.
“Becoming a dog-friendly company was never a conscious decision,” says Beth Bellanti Pander, program manager of Vodka for Dog People at Tito’s. “It automatically just happened in the early days of the distillery and office because most of us do everything with dogs by our side. Dogs have always been a part of the Tito’s work family.”
Tito’s employees can bring their dogs to work any day of the week, as long as the dog meets the criteria of the company’s dog policy. The policy includes meeting a variety of conditions that determine whether a dog is a good fit for the office, such as feeling comfortable being on a leash all day and engaging well with other dogs.
“There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding whether your company can be pet-friendly,” Pander says. “For example, companies must to take into account the wishes of all their employees; ensure the office has green space nearby to take dogs out; and make sure there is enough room in the workplace for dogs to have a safe place to lay down away from foot traffic.”
The team at Tito’s also takes precautionary measures to make their office extra pet-friendly, such as using carpet squares that can easily be replaced if a dog has an accident. While the company has green space for employees to take their dogs out, Tito’s is developing an even larger space where employees and their dogs can be outside together working or playing. Tito’s even has a dog-themed conference room!
For Tito’s, allowing dogs in the office has resulted in an incredibly positive response. Employees say that dogs at the office contributes to people’s overall happiness at work, relieves stress and creates a reason for people to step away from their desks and technology throughout the day.
Being a dog-friendly company has also brought Tito’s employees closer together. Co-workers regularly share dog-sitting duties with one another as well as caretaking tips, which has created a strong bond between staff. Dogs in the office also brighten the day of many of the guests that visit the Tito’s office.
Dogs are such an important part of Tito’s culture that the company even started a program, Vodka for Dog People, to work with various animal charities to raise money for dogs. The company also regularly partners with animal welfare nonprofits on fundraising efforts and plans ongoing local yappy hours.
With over 84 million pet-owning homes in the United States, there are still a surprising number of obstacles in many communities that make pet ownership more challenging than it needs to be.
You want what’s best for your company and the people you’re responsible for, and maybe you’re anxious about the extra variables welcoming pets will add to your operation.
